Dale Dougherty: We are makers from TEDxMotorCity

Dale Dougherty, founder of Make magazine and organizer of Maker Faires, gave a talk at TEDxMotorCity.

“America was built by makers — curious, enthusiastic amateur inventors whose tinkering habit sparked whole new industries. At TED@MotorCity, MAKE magazine publisher Dale Dougherty says we’re all makers at heart, and shows cool new tools to tinker with, like Arduinos, affordable 3D printers, even DIY satellites.”

I encourage you to watch it all and share. There are many points mentioned throughout we can use when talking up our local Maker Spaces.

Gathering STEAM – Maui Open Studios Event

Makers and hackers are often thought of as Scientists Technologists Engineers and Mathematicians (computer geeks) – STEM in current educational grant lingo. As you may recall, I favor expanding this to include the Artists under the acronym STEAM.

Well starting this weekend is The Maui Open Studios Event 2010. Over the next 3 weekends, Artists across Maui will be opening their studios (or in galleries) to the public for free look and talk story.  The first weekend (Feb 5-6) highlights artists on southern shore (kapalua, lahaina, kihei, Wailua and Lanai City).  The second weekend (Feb 12-13) is the northern shore and upcountry (Wailuku, Kahului, Paia, Makawao, Kula, Haiku, etc). The last weekend (Feb 10-20) is the eastern end – Hana area.

I have met several of these artists and many are very interested in what a Maker Space can offer.  If you’ve been to any of our meetings, or those of the TechHui MauiTechies, chances are you have met at least one of them – Crystal Jean Baranyk.
For some of Crystal’s artwork check out http://seabean.tumblr.com Crystal has her own show opening on Friday, February 11th from 6-9pm at the Courthouse Gallery – 648 Wharf Street, Lahaina HI.

Go visit some of the studios. Expose yourself to art.  Find out what others like to make.
