Kiawe Pod Flour Workshop

Come learn from people on the cutting edge of the sustainable food movement. Learn how they are utilizing a nutritional and sustainable food source found all over Maui island and the State of Hawaii. Learn how kiawe tree pods can be harvested and ground into a flour with amazing health promoting properties: a highly nutritious superior energy food, both naturally sweet and diabetic friendly, naturally stable and easily stored for long periods.

There will a talk story time where experiences with kiawe bean pods to date will be shared, as well as the vision for the part this food can play in the local sustainable food movement. Followed by a short video from the Maui show, “Search Hawaii”, entitled “Wai’anae Gold”

Then, there will be a hands-on demonstration of how Waianae Gold “Aina Bars” are made, with plenty of opportunity for sampling… mmmm…

Check out the Wianae Gold website at: http://waianaegold.com

Presenters: Vince Dodge from Waianae Gold on Oahu. He has been a leader in bringing this important food stuff into public awareness. For much of the last 11 years he has: researched and visited with native peoples to gain knowledge of traditional kiawe practices, developed a network of kiawe pod harvesters, obtained effective flour milling hardware from Argentina, developed a processing system for making the pods into flour, invented a number of products featuring Kiawe flour, and established a marketing network that places these products in retail stores such as Down to Earth and Mana Foods.

Sunny Savage is a Maui wild harvester. She is a mother and author of the book “Wild Food Plants of Hawaii” and has been inspired to utilize the kiawe fruit in many ways. Sunny holds an MS in Nutrition Education and has traveled to all 7 continents, learning from plants and people along the way. She will bring stories of her experiences and samples of some of the delectable delicacies she has developed using kiawe flour. Check out her website at: http://www.sunnysavage.com

Yuji Taira is a fellow Maui harvester and a dreamer of the vision.

Sunny and Yuji have been the core of the Maui kiawe bean gathers. Come, connect with them, and prepare to join in the harvest this summer!

This class will be taught by Nick Fournier who has both used and taught design software at various institutions at all levels.   He uses Fusion 360 in his profession as a custom woodworker.

1. The class will be five sessions  It will cover all basic functions of Fusion and students will have the opportunity to either 3D print or machine a simple part on our mini mill.

a. The session on Memorial Day will be a study session and  attendance is not required.

2. Cost is $80 for the entire class and must be paid in advance.

a. Active Paid Regular Members will receive a discount in the form of a refund check from the treasurer

3. The class will be held on Monday Evenings from 6 PM to 9 PM.

a.  All students need their own AutoDesk account. Please install Fusion360 on your laptop ahead of time.  The software is free for educational and hobbyist use.

b.  We will have a limited number of desktops with Fusion, but you still must have your own AutoDesk account.  Let us know when you register if you need to use our computers.

c.   We will have a class repository for sharing files on the AutoDesk Cloud.

d.   Fusion 360 requires a 64 bit OS and a decent Video card.

4. Our instructor is Nick Fournier who has both used and taught design software at various institutions at all levels.   He uses Fusion 360 in his profession as a custom woodworker.

Fusion 360 is Autodesk’s software for computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM). It runs on both PC and Mac 64 bit systems and is free to students and makers, low cost for professional users. Makers around the world are using it for designing parts for 3D Printing, CNC milling, etc.

Electronics and Programming–Learn About Arduino!

You can learn Arduino one of two ways:

  1. Come to the Arduino Special Interest Group on Thursdays, click here for more info, and do a self-paced study course over several weeks. We can provide you with all the items you need, coaching, patience and assistancel.
  2. Email us at email classes@mauimakers.com and let us know that you’re interested. We will set up a special, focused beginner-friendly session to get you on your way quickly.

What is an Arduino?

Arduinos are a low cost, easy to use family of microcontrollers.  Want to learn about the basic use of Arduino computers?

Free to paid members. $10.00 for non-members. First time is FREE.

Learn About 3D Manufacturing Technology: Design, Printing, e-Nable Prosthetics

Tuesday 6:00pm-8:00pm

3D Printing is a fantastic technology that lets you create parts at low cost form 3d-design files. Maui Makers has several 3D Printers in house (our own and on loan from members).

The group has a couple of focuses:

  1. Introducing all skill levels to the power of 3D Printing.
  2. Printing e-Nable hands for those in need on Maui. These low cost prosthetics are a great way to understand the power of 3D printing. Come on down to the makerspace and help out!
  3. Learning Fusion 360 so we can customize designs for the hands (and personal projects). Fusion 360 has a rather steep learning curve, but is very powerful. Learning in a group eases the frustration.

Free to paid members, $10.00 for non-members. First time is Free.
